Savage Glitter

She was never going to seek gainful employment again, that was for certain. She'd remain outside the public sector. She'd be an anarchist, she'd travel with jaguars. She was going to train herself to be totally irrational. She'd fall in love with a totally inappropriate person. She'd really work on it, but abandon would be involved as well. She'd have different names, a.k.a. Snake, a.k.a. Snow - no that was juvenile. She wanted to be extraordinary, to possess a savage glitter

Joy Williams, The Quick and the Dead

Birkedal’s color scheme has a wide vocabulary, characterized by a technically skillful polarity between a powerful impasto, where the paint is applied thickly and purely, and in-between applying a delicate glaze containing pure linseed oil as a painting medium with a deliberately prolonged drying time. As a result, her paintings obtain a subtle repertoire of forms of expression. The characteristic style of her artwork is somewhat changed through the unruliness of a surface dynamic that may be prepared and channeled. Simultaneously surface acts “by itself”, according to the laws of physics: in the blending and saturation of the paints, the structuring of the backgrounds; through selected, provoked drops of color, cracks, and cracking techniques or rhizomatic effects which project fine lines with a promise of structure.
