Variations in Suface Type

A paper exhibition curated by Malte Fisker
May 5 - 26, 2023, Anne Aarsland Gallery

The exhibition 'Variations in Surface Type focuses on paper as an artistic form of expression. Over the last century, the definition of paperwork has expanded its boundaries significantly. Since drawings were previously perceived as preparations for other works of art or illustrative images, in recent times they have transformed into an art form in its own right. Just like with painting and sculpture, artists have pushed the boundaries of paper as a medium and expanded the meaning of line and surface. The exhibition shows paper works by 8 artists, and the works balance in the field of tension between figuration / abstraction, linear / painterly/constructive / expressive/ opaque / transparent, flat / spatial and so on. Focusing on the importance of paper, the artists at the exhibition use a variety of different materials methods and materials, such as pencil, watercolor, oil, acrylic, gouache, serigraphy, etching and lithography, expanding the definition of paper work and the possibilities of the medium.
