How do you become an artist? Is it a natural talent that unfolds? How do you learn to create art? And when can you call yourself an artist – when do you truly feel that you are one?
The concept behind Tilbageblik is to give the viewer an insight into the engine room of art. It presents examples of the many roads – detours, byways and highways – that an artist typically has to travel, and the many experiments and trials involved in developing as an artist and becoming one.
The exhibition presents works by eight contemporary artists with very different practices. A retrospective exhibition usually guides the audience through the work of a single artist over the course of a long career. Here, however, eight artists are brought together, allowing the exhibition to show a broader range of the stages an artist may pass through on the way towards a mature and personal expression.
The exhibition aims to show that a work of art is not simply an idea that appears out of nowhere, but an expression of accumulated experience, experimentation with materials and ideas, and observation over a long period of time. The public can see works ranging from early exercises and studies to larger, fully developed works that characterize the artists’ practices today.

The exhibition has been developed in collaboration with three of the participating artists Jonna Pedersen, Simon Grimm and Jacob Hoff – as well as Kunstbygningen i Vrå – Engelundsamlingen and Janusbygningen in Tistrup.
